It is not necessary for the person who needs help to apply personally. Any family member, friend or professional colleague who is aware of a situation in which the Correspondents Fund could be of assistance may, and is urged to, call the case to the attention of the Fund or any of its Trustees.
The Trustees hope that anyone aware of an eligible person who could be helped through a difficult period by the Fund will make the circumstances known in writing to the Correspondents Fund. All such communications are handled promptly and in confidences.
Under the Fund’s charter, all assistance is in the form “temporary emergency relief.” And all aid is outright, one-time grants. The Fund may not make loans. But recipients, once their own emergency is past, may contribute and have contributed to the Fund for the aid of others who may need help. Contributions to the Fund are tax-deductible.
The Correspondents Fund works closely with United States Embassies and consulates throughout the world. The plight of men and women who qualify for Fund aid, who need our help, who are stranded in other countries, who are ill and in financial need, often is brought to our attention by the embassies and Consulates, and with their close cooperation, on many occasions we have helped to bring our colleagues back home or aid them abroad.
